Cayla DeWitt
Caregiver Support Specialist
Cayla experienced abuse at a young age, growing up in a home where violence and neglect were part of her daily reality. She found herself trapped in an environment of fear and instability, eventually becoming a victim of human trafficking at a young age. When she arrived in the United States, she was placed in a group home. Soon after, she was placed in the foster care system, where she bounced between different placements, never feeling truly safe or wanted until finally placed with her last foster family. They taught her the true meaning of unconditional love and family. Cayla is a picture of resilience and the hope we have for every child experiencing the child welfare system.
In her own words, "Navigating a new country, new language, new culture, immigration processes, and the complexities of the foster care system was scary and harrowing. I was very blessed to have found solace and guidance from a few dedicated individuals who saw beyond my circumstances and believed in my potential. Despite the trauma and challenges I faced, I was determined not to let my past define me. I knew education was my way out, so I worked hard to excel in school, often leaning on supportive mentors and counselors who believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself. Over time, I discovered a passion for helping others who had experienced similar pain and struggles. That led me to pursue a career in occupational therapy.
Becoming an occupational therapist was both a personal victory and a professional calling. I now use my experiences to guide and support those who are overcoming their own obstacles, offering them a path to healing and self-recovery. My journey has been difficult, but it has also been one of resilience, strength, and transformation, reminding me that even from the darkest places, we can rebuild and find purpose."
